Meet Your 2019 Supreme Champion
Wooden Spoon Boutique Freezery, Wellington
The judges’ scores are in and Wellington’s Wooden Spoon Boutique Freezery has taken top honours in the third annual Outstanding NZ Food Producer Awards being named 2019 Supreme Champion and Emerson’s Dairy Champion. Wooden Spoon Boutique Freezery received the accolades for its Blackcurrant Crunch ice cream.
“This flavour is near and dear to our hearts as we got to work with a group of high school students out of Dunedin, who came up with the concept and 10% of the sale of each tub goes to food rescue heroes, Kiwi Harvest,” said co-founder Sharon Galeon.
Sharon and co-founder Midori Willoughby say the creation of Blackcurrant Crunch was the result of a happy confluence of events. A group of Otago Girls High School students asked the Wooden Spoon Boutique Freezery if they could help create a new flavour for their Young Enterprise Scheme called Spoon Me, and then coincidentally the team from ViBERi Organic Blackcurrants got in touch.
This serendipitous set of events led to the creation of the pretty purple ice cream which the judges praised for its crunch and fruity flavour. Sharon and Midori describe this triple ‘collab’ as a summer-y, refreshing, tart yet sweet ViBERi organic blackcurrant ice cream with loads of caramel-chip crunch.
Sharon Galeon and co-founder Midori Willoughby are all about collabs, especially with other NZ producers (see our story on the Wooden Spoon Boutique Freezery + Fix & Fogg Collaboration).
“Something we’ve done since our inception is to collaborate with local producers. We’re into the idea of eating locally as much as possible. New Zealand has a wealth of food producers that make great food, and also economically and environmentally it’s just better to eat locally. That’s really important to us. Also, things that are made locally are generally fresher, and fresher tastes better.”
Wooden Spoon was founded by the pair in Wellington in 2011. They specialise in small batch, hand-crafted ice cream made with quality ingredients. Their flavours are inspired by memories from their childhood, adventures to new places and local New Zealand treasures.
