Meet Your Maker | Outstanding Producer Profile
“Know your farmer, know your food” is the motto of newlywed Kiwi entrepreneurs Ali and Dion Kilmister, founders of Homegrown Farm Fresh Meats. We recently caught up with Ali and agree wholeheartedly with her view on the value of knowing your producers:
“More people are wanting to know where their food is coming from and the story behind where the animal was born and raised and want the opportunity to purchase whole animals processed and delivered ready for the freezer.” – Ali Kilmister, Co-Owner, Homegrown Farm Fresh Meats
Introducing the Kilmisters
Ali and Dion bring city and country together—Ali was a “city slicker” in Wellington until she met Dion and joined him on the Wairarapa farm nearly six years ago. Dion has been farming his entire life and his passion for the pasture has been transformed into an award-winning business, thanks in great part to Ali’s willingness to roll up her sleeves in all aspects of the business, from keeping up with cutting-edge farm tech to swapping recipes with customers.
Last year was full of celebrations for the Kilmisters on both the personal and professional fronts. Shortly after winning Wairarapa Farm Buisness of the Year, Homegrown Farm Fresh Meats was awarded 2018 Outstanding NZ Food Producer Awards Ara Paddock Champion for their Gourmet Lamb Pack. Ali describes the Outstanding NZ Food Producer win:
“WOW WOW WOW – Dion and I are totally honored to have won a gold medal and then gone on to win the Paddock Category. The external validation of our product and the additional marketing that we have received has been absolute gold!”
Just months later, the couple eloped to Rarotonga for a romantic beachside wedding—and the menu featured local seafood for a change of pace!
Forget “Gate-to-Plate.” Homegrown offers “Ram-to-Plate.”
This Kiwi version of the power couple are devoted to ensuring their farm offers the best possible meat for your family. They not only process homegrown meat and courier overnight it directly to your front door (known as “gate to plate”), they also breed their own livestock. Ali and Dion have invested in breeding their Romney/texel ewes with Charollais rams to ensure consistently premium lamb. This is a unique undertaking in New Zealand and the innovation has created beautifully marbled meat that you can rely on being absolutely delicious.
Ali says their goal is for Kiwis to eat what the farmer eats and how the farmer eats. “As farmers, we are really very spoilt having a whole lamb in the freezer – the good old-fashioned nose to tail eating.” This means stocking your freezer with half and whole lambs and packs of homegrown Angus beef. Believe us, these farmers know their meat and each pack is hand selected by Dion.
