Meet Your Maker | Outstanding Producer Profile
What’s more exciting than the launch of a new product from one of our favourite award-winning Outstanding NZ Food Producers? A collaboration between two!
Wooden Spoon Boutique Freezery have teamed up with the 2017 Outstanding Producer Earth (Crafted) Champions, Fix & Fogg, to create a new ice cream and the results are stunning. Hot Fudge Sundae, a Freeze Craft Limited Edition, is inspired by sweet childhood memories, lovingly crafted with local ingredients, and illustrated by Wellingtonian artist Anna Johnstone – amazing. We spoke with Sharon Galeon, co-founder of Wooden Spoon to learn more about this exciting collab.
Something we’ve done since our inception is to collaborate with local producers. We’re really into the idea of eating locally as much as possible.
Sharon explains, “Wellington has a wealth of food producers that make great food, and also economically and environmentally it’s just better to eat locally. So that’s really important to us.
“Also, things that are made locally are generally fresher, and fresher tastes better. For instance, our dairy is local and the coffee in the [2018 Outstanding NZ Food Producer Awards Gold Medal-winning] Ca Phe Da ice cream is made by Peoples Coffee from Wellington.”
Sharon and co-founder Midori Willoughby’s latest collaboration is a dairy-based ice cream called Hot Fudge Sundae made with Wellington-based company Fix & Fogg’s Smooth Peanut Butter—an essential in any pantry! Hot Fudge Sundae is a lightly salted vanilla base with a chewy, fudgy ripple and a swirl of rich peanut butter. Sharon describes this decadent creation as a “deconstructed hot fudge sundae—it’s really yummy!”
The salted vanilla has just a hint of salt, as these two ingredients are best friends. Sharon explains, “The salt makes all the flavours sing. We use a really beautiful vanilla, and the salt just makes it pop. I’m really excited about it, and when people try this flavor they’re going to love it.”
Hot Fudge Sundae takes us back to the ice cream parlours of our childhood, surprise trips out on a school night, and anticipation for the sweetest of treats.
What inspired this flavour? Sharon explains, “Hot Fudge Sundae takes us back to the ice cream parlours of our childhood, surprise trips out on a school night, and anticipation for the sweetest of treats.” This notion is playfully depicted in Anna Johnstone’s illustration (above), which is part of a series of art commissioned by Wooden Spoon.
“With a lot of our flavours, there’s a story behind them, and we’ve often struggled to articulate that story to the customer …We’re inspired by our memories and we want to tell those stories in the best, clearest way and visual illustration just made the most sense.” Wooden Spoon are working with four Wellington-based artists to visually communicate the story behind several featured products.
The Wooden Spoon Illustrator Series is being exhibited on their website at woodenspoonfreezery.com and you can see the latest by following @WoodenSpoonFreezery on Instagram and @WoodenSpoonNZ on Facebook and Twitter.
Wooden Spoon’s Hot Fudge Sunday is available at select New Worlds, Moore Wilson’s, Farro Fresh, and is coming to Countdown in the spring. RRP is $8.99.
